Constructed in 1963 and designed by Professor Jean Labatut of Princeton University, Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is a private, all-girls school in Princeton, NJ dedicated to using technology to provide a best-in-class interdisciplinary, hands-on learning environment emphasizing leadership, STEM, finance and economics.
A registered on-staff architect asked Encon to join his team in a design/build project. The goal of the project was to improve the operational performance of the campus. Working with KMC Controls and Encon as the system integrator. Encon started off this ambitious project by completely overhauling the outdated control system already in place. This was step one for modernizing the school, improving student comfort and getting the energy management under control. KMC Controls worked with Encon and Stuart to fine-tune the upgraded system, leading to a whopping 45% reduction in energy consumption.
During the upgrade, KMC Controls unveiled KMC Commander ™, its Internet of Things, or IoT, building automation platform. David said, “The real advantage to us is that we see every aspect of building automation on one single screen. On the installation side, it is very easy to install and is very quick to populate the information.”
As the project began growing in new and creative ways, Stuart granted students access to the building’s data, allowing a gateway between technology, student learning and building automation. This was when the work became really rewarding. The ease of KMC Commander’s connectivity inspired a real-world learning lab for the students by giving them access to real-time information and a “Campus as Lab” program as part of students’ STEM studies.
